Block-Based Editing

Block-based editing is a CMS approach where pages and articles are assembled from individual reusable units of content or functionality.

Block-based editing is a content-editing approach where pages or articles are assembled from individual units called blocks.

Each block represents a particular kind of content or functionality.

Common Blocks

Blocks may represent:

  • Paragraphs
  • Headings
  • Images
  • Videos
  • Quotes
  • Buttons
  • Columns
  • Galleries
  • Embeds
  • Custom components

Each block can have its own content and configuration.

WordPress describes blocks as the fundamental units of its Block Editor.

Block Editor vs. Page Builder

The concepts overlap.

Both allow content to be assembled visually.

A block system tends to emphasize modular content units, while a page builder often emphasizes broader control over visual page layout.

In practice, modern systems can provide both.

The important architectural question is not what the editor calls them.

It is whether the resulting content remains predictable, reusable, and maintainable.

Block vs. Component

A block is primarily an editing concept.

A Component is an architectural/interface concept.

A reusable component may be exposed to editors as a block.

For example:

CTA component → represented as CTA block in the CMS

That allows editors to choose the content while developers preserve the component's accessible and responsive behaviour.

Why It Matters

Blocks can provide a useful middle ground between:

  • Completely unstructured rich text
  • Completely rigid templates

They allow editors to construct richer content without needing full control over the design system.

Common Problems

Common problems include:

  • Hundreds of available block types
  • Several blocks solving the same problem
  • Arbitrary styling controls
  • Recreating Components manually
  • Editors using layout blocks to simulate structured Content Types
  • Accessibility behaviour varying between blocks
  • Too much freedom producing inconsistent pages

How to Improve

Offer a deliberately limited block library.

Create blocks around real content patterns and constrain design decisions that should remain part of the theme or Component.

The goal is editorial flexibility without making every page its own design system.
