Accessibility Audit An accessibility audit is a structured evaluation used to identify and understand barriers that may prevent people with disabilities from using a website or digital product. Accessible Name An accessible name is the programmatic label that communicates the identity or purpose of an interface element to assistive technologies. Alt Text Alt text is a text alternative that communicates the relevant meaning or purpose of an image when the image itself cannot be perceived. ARIA ARIA is a set of roles and attributes used to communicate additional interface meaning and state to assistive technologies. Automated Accessibility Testing Automated accessibility testing uses software to identify machine-detectable accessibility problems but cannot determine complete accessibility or WCAG conformance on its own. Colour Contrast Colour contrast is the measurable visual difference between foreground and background colours used to keep text and important interface elements distinguishable. Focus State A focus state identifies the interface element currently receiving keyboard input and should provide a clear visible indicator of that position. Keyboard Navigation Keyboard navigation is the ability to navigate and operate a website using keyboard input rather than relying on a mouse or touchscreen. Landmark A landmark is a programmatically identified page region that helps assistive technology users understand and navigate the major structure of a page. Manual Accessibility Testing Manual accessibility testing uses direct human review and interaction to identify accessibility barriers that require context, judgement, or real use to evaluate. Screen Reader A screen reader is assistive technology that presents digital content through speech or braille using accessibility information provided by the interface. Semantic HTML Semantic HTML uses HTML elements according to their meaning and purpose so browsers and assistive technologies can understand the structure and behaviour of a page. Skip Link A skip link lets users bypass repeated page content and move directly to an important region such as the main content. WCAG WCAG is an international standard containing testable requirements for making web content more accessible to people with disabilities. WCAG Level AA WCAG Level AA is a conformance level that requires a page to satisfy all applicable Level A and Level AA success criteria for a specified WCAG version. Website Accessibility Website accessibility is the practice of designing and building websites so people with disabilities can access, understand, navigate, and use them.
