Channel Manager
A channel manager is software used to distribute accommodation availability, rates, inventory, and reservation information between a property and multiple booking channels.
It reduces the need to maintain each distribution channel independently.
What It Does
A channel manager may connect the property to:
- Online Travel Agencies
- Booking Engine
- Global Distribution Systems
- Wholesalers
- Travel agents
- Other distribution partners
It can publish information outward and receive reservations back.
Oracle's distribution platform documents the publication of availability, rates, and inventory, room and rate-plan mapping, channel settings, and reservation delivery across connected channels. Oracle OPERA Cloud Distribution overview
How It Works
A simplified flow looks like:
Booking.com
↑ ↓
PMS ↔ Channel Manager ↔ Expedia
↑ ↓
GDSWhen a reservation arrives:
- The channel sends the booking
- The Channel Manager receives it
- The reservation reaches the PMS
- Availability changes
- Updated inventory is distributed back to connected channels
The timing and exact direction depend on the integration.
Channel Manager vs. PMS
A **PMS** manages operations at the property.
A Channel Manager manages distribution between systems.
Many modern hospitality platforms combine them, but the distinction remains useful when diagnosing where a problem originates.
Channel Manager vs. Booking Engine
The **Booking Engine** is a customer-facing direct sales channel.
The Channel Manager coordinates availability and rates across channels.
They should usually operate from consistent Availability, Rates & Inventory.
Why It Matters
Without channel management, staff selling the same limited room inventory through several platforms may need to update every channel manually.
That creates risks such as:
- Overbooking
- Stale rates
- Closed rooms remaining available
- Promotions being inconsistent
- Manual reservation entry
Common Problems
Common problems include:
- Incorrect room mapping
- Incorrect Rate Plan mapping
- Synchronization delays
- One channel refusing an update
- Reservations failing to reach the PMS
- Closed inventory reopening unexpectedly
- The same setting configured differently in several systems
- Nobody monitoring integration errors
How to Improve
Document the direction of every important data flow.
For each channel, know:
- What publishes availability
- What publishes rates
- What publishes restrictions
- How reservations return
- How cancellations return
- How rooms and rate plans are mapped
Monitor failures rather than assuming synchronization is permanent once configured.
