Global Distribution System (GDS)

A global distribution system is a travel-industry network used to distribute hotel and other travel inventory to travel agencies and booking intermediaries.

A global distribution system, or GDS, is a travel-industry distribution network used to make travel inventory available to travel agencies and other booking intermediaries.

Hotels can use GDS distribution to make rates and availability accessible within broader travel-booking systems.

Who Uses GDS Networks

GDS systems are commonly used by:

  • Travel agencies
  • Corporate travel managers
  • Travel-management companies
  • Airline and hotel reservation services
  • Other travel intermediaries

Major GDS providers include systems such as Amadeus, Sabre, and Travelport.

How Hotels Connect

A property generally does not manage every external travel-agent relationship individually.

A CRS, Channel Manager, representation service, or other hospitality distribution system may connect the property's room and rate information to the GDS.

Oracle's current distribution platform includes explicit configuration for GDS channels alongside OTA and direct-booking distribution. Oracle OPERA Cloud channel configuration

GDS vs. OTA

An **OTA** usually provides a consumer-facing marketplace.

A GDS primarily provides travel inventory to a professional distribution network.

A traveller may ultimately book a GDS-distributed hotel room through a corporate travel service without directly interacting with the GDS itself.

Why It Matters

GDS distribution can matter particularly for properties serving:

  • Corporate travellers
  • Travel agencies
  • Managed travel programmes
  • Large organizations
  • International distribution networks

It is not necessarily important for every small tourism operator.

Common Problems

Common problems include:

  • Maintaining a channel the property no longer needs
  • Room and rate mapping errors
  • Different rates appearing across systems
  • Staff not knowing where a GDS reservation originated
  • Enterprise distribution complexity added to a small operation unnecessarily

How to Improve

Treat GDS access as a distribution decision.

Understand:

  • Which guest segment it serves
  • What it costs
  • What inventory is published
  • Which Rate Plans are available
  • Which system owns the connection
  • How reservations return to the PMS
