Uptime Monitoring

Uptime monitoring automatically checks whether a website or service remains reachable and alerts responsible people when availability problems are detected.

Uptime monitoring automatically checks whether a website or service is reachable and functioning at regular intervals.

It provides an external signal when something that should be available stops responding correctly.

What It Can Check

A monitoring service may check:

More advanced monitoring may simulate complete user workflows.

Cloudflare's current health-check system, for example, can monitor an IP address or hostname and evaluate availability, response codes, latency, and failure reasons. Cloudflare Docs: Health Checks

Uptime vs. Website Health

A website returning:

200 OK

is reachable.

That does not prove:

Uptime monitoring detects a specific class of failure.

It is not complete quality assurance.

Why It Matters

Without monitoring, a site can fail until:

  • A customer notices
  • Staff happen to visit
  • Search traffic declines
  • Someone sends an email

Monitoring shortens the time between failure and awareness.

Alerting

Monitoring only helps operationally if an alert reaches someone able to respond.

Cloudflare's health-check tooling supports notifications when monitored server health changes. Cloudflare Docs: Health Check Analytics and alerts

A useful setup therefore needs:

  • Check
  • Failure threshold
  • Alert
  • Owner
  • Response process

Common Problems

Common problems include:

  • Monitoring only the homepage
  • Alert sent to former employee
  • One temporary failure generating unnecessary emergency alerts
  • Monitoring from only one perspective
  • Alerts ignored because they trigger too often
  • Status code checked but page content broken
  • No one responsible for responding

How to Improve

Monitor the most important public service, not every possible URL.

For a simple site:

Is the main website reachable?

may be enough.

For transactional systems, additional checks may verify critical endpoints or workflows.
