Website Maintenance & Ownership

Website maintenance and ownership cover the access, documentation, backups, environments, dependencies, and processes needed to keep a website reliable and under the organization's control over time.

Terms

Administrative Access Administrative access is a high-permission level that allows a user to make significant configuration, access, content, or operational changes to a website or service. Backup & Restore Backup and restore are the processes of creating recoverable copies of website data and using those copies to recover from loss, corruption, mistakes, or failure. Dependency A dependency is software, infrastructure, or an external service that another part of a website relies on to function. Deployment Deployment is the process of moving an approved technical change into an environment where it can run, including releasing changes to the live production website. Maintenance Plan A maintenance plan documents the recurring work, ownership, and schedule required to keep a website healthy after launch. Production Environment The production environment is the live version of a website or application used by real visitors and connected to real operational systems. Rollback A rollback returns a website or application to a previous known state when a newer deployment causes a problem. Single Point of Failure A single point of failure is one person, account, system, or component whose loss or failure can prevent an important service from continuing. Staging Environment A staging environment is a non-production version of a website used to test changes in conditions that resemble the live website before deployment. Technical Debt Technical debt describes technical conditions or short-term decisions that make future changes more difficult, risky, or expensive. Technical Documentation Technical documentation records the information needed to understand, operate, maintain, recover, or change a website and its supporting systems. Uptime Monitoring Uptime monitoring automatically checks whether a website or service remains reachable and alerts responsible people when availability problems are detected. Version Control Version control records changes to project files over time so earlier states can be reviewed, compared, restored, and attributed. Website Handoff A website handoff is the structured transfer of access, documentation, knowledge, and operational responsibility for a website from one person or team to another. Website Maintenance & Ownership Website maintenance and ownership are the systems, responsibilities, access, and documentation required to keep a website reliable, recoverable, understandable, and under organizational control. Website Ownership Website ownership is the organization's practical control over the accounts, code, data, infrastructure, and services required to operate and maintain its website.
